Frequently Asked Questions

What lessons do you offer?

Little Lake Music Academy offers Suzuki instruction in violin and viola, and traditional instruction in violin, viola, and piano.

What are the benefits of music lessons?

In a time when we’re seeing a steady decrease in music and arts education in schools, it is important to understand the positive role that musical studies plays in your child’s development. Here are just a few examples of how music learning supports all learning:

  • Language and reasoning: Growing up in a musically rich environment directly enhances a child’s ability to decode the sounds that make up languages. Additionally, the part of the brain that is developed through musical training is the same part that controls language comprehension.

  • Memory: There are two main benefits concerning memory. One is that music requires a high level of memorization, a skill that translates to all other academic studies. The other is that the brain easily stores musical motifs, making music an excellent educational tool for memorizing information.

  • Motor Skills: The study of an instrument helps to develop large and fine motor skills and improves hand-eye coordination.

  • Discipline: The daily practice needed to learn an instrument is an excellent tool to develop a sense of discipline and work ethic, which translates into a longer attention span and successful study habits.

  • Imagination and curiosity: Musical training fosters imaginative skills and creativity. Creative thinking is a powerful tool that can be applied throughout a person’s academic studies as well as their entire life!

What’s the difference between the Suzuki Method and the traditional method of teaching?

That’s an excellent question that I would love to explore more indepth with you if you choose to contact us. Briefly, the traditional method of teaching places an emphasis on reading music, scale studies, etude studies, and does not generally involve parental participation. Suzuki, on the other hand, places an emphasis on learning by ear, also called the Mother Tongue method, has a repertoire-based curriculum, and invites parents to be an active participant in their child’s musical development.

Which method is appropriate for my child?

This question will be best answered once we have started a dialog and have discussed you and your child’s expectations and musical goals. The short answer is that the Suzuki Method is best suited for younger beginners and Suzuki transfer students, and the traditional method is best suited for older beginners and traditional transfer students.

Are you offering lessons right now?

Yes! Online lessons are currently available. Online lessons are appropriate for some students and not for others, so if your child is interested in online lessons we’d love to speak with you.

In person lessons will be available starting in August, as long as Covid case numbers continue to trend in a downward direction, California’s planned reopening on June 15 is successful, and hospitalization rates stay low. Safety measures will be taken at every lesson and will be a part of our Agreement materials. You can read more about our Safety Measures Here.
